Clutch, AWD and driveline repairs.

Explore symptoms, inspections and the repairs available for your Subaru. The details are grouped below to make the page easier to use.

Common symptoms and driveline diagnosis +

Clutch, transmission, axle and differential problems can produce similar symptoms. A proper inspection helps separate a clutch issue from an axle, bearing, transmission or differential problem.

Clutch Slipping

Engine RPM increases without a matching increase in vehicle speed, especially under load or acceleration.

Hard or Grinding Shifts

Clutch release, hydraulic problems, shifter issues or transmission wear can affect gear engagement.

Shudder on Takeoff

Clutch, flywheel, mount and driveline problems can create vibration as the vehicle begins moving.

Differential Noise

Whining, humming or growling can indicate bearing, gear, fluid or other differential concerns.

Clicking During Turns

Worn CV joints and axle components can create clicking or knocking while turning.

Driveline Vibration

Axles, mounts, driveshafts, wheels and transmission-related components can all contribute to vibration.

Clutch and transmission concerns +

Subaru's drivetrain works as a system. When there is a noise, vibration or engagement problem, the complete power-transfer path needs to be considered.

Clutch Disc Friction material condition and wear.
Pressure Plate Clamping force and release operation.
Flywheel Surface condition, heat damage and wear.
Release Bearing Bearing noise and clutch release concerns.
Master Cylinder Clutch hydraulic operation and leaks.
Slave Cylinder Hydraulic clutch actuation.
Manual Transmission Fluid, leaks, shifting and mechanical concerns.
Front Differential Fluid, seals, bearings and related concerns.
Rear Differential Fluid maintenance, leaks and noise diagnosis.
CV Axles Boots, joints, vibration and clicking noises.
Driveshaft Inspection for play, damage and vibration.
Driveline Mounts Engine and transmission movement or deterioration.

Replacing a clutch is significant work. We want to understand why the clutch is not operating correctly and evaluate the related components while the system is accessible.

Clutch Disc Check wear, contamination and friction-material condition.
Pressure Plate Evaluate clamping and release operation.
Flywheel Inspect for wear, hot spots and surface condition.
Release & Pilot Bearings Inspect related bearings where applicable.
Hydraulics Check master cylinder, slave cylinder and hydraulic operation.
AWD, axles, differentials and performance +

Subaru's AWD system relies on multiple mechanical components working together. Fluid condition, axle health, matched tires and differential operation all matter.

Front Differential Fluid service, leaks and noise diagnosis.
Rear Differential Fluid condition, seals and internal noise concerns.
CV Axles Inspect boots, joints and axle condition.
Driveshaft Inspect for vibration, looseness and damage where applicable.
Tire Matching Correct tire size and similar tread depth matter on AWD vehicles.

Differential fluid lubricates gears and bearings under significant load. The correct service requirement depends on the Subaru model, driveline and how the vehicle is used.

Fluid Condition Inspect for contamination, deterioration and incorrect fluid.
Leak Inspection Check seals, housings and related components.
Noise Diagnosis Whining and humming require proper diagnosis before repair.
Preventative Maintenance Service intervals depend on model and operating conditions.

Modified engines, increased torque and aggressive driving can put additional load on the clutch and driveline. The correct repair should match how the vehicle is actually being used.

Subaru Performance Service
Performance Clutches Match clutch characteristics to the vehicle and intended use.
Modified Power Levels Higher torque can change clutch and driveline requirements.
Street Performance Balance holding capacity with real-world drivability.
Driveline Inspection Check related mounts, axles and drivetrain components.

SUBARU DRIVELINE FAQ

Common clutch & driveline questions.

What are the signs of a worn Subaru clutch?

Common symptoms include slipping under acceleration, a changing engagement point, difficulty selecting gears, shudder during takeoff, burning smells or abnormal clutch-related noise.

Do you replace Subaru clutches?

Yes. Dale's services Subaru clutch systems and can inspect the clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel, release components and hydraulic system before recommending the appropriate repair.

Do you service Subaru differentials?

Yes. Front and rear differential fluid service, leak inspection and noise diagnosis can be performed where applicable.

Why is my Subaru clicking when I turn?

A worn outer CV joint is one possible cause of clicking during turns, but the axle and surrounding components should be inspected before assuming the axle is the problem.

Why does my Subaru have a driveline vibration?

Vibration can come from axles, mounts, driveshafts, tires, wheels or transmission and differential components. The driving condition under which the vibration appears is an important diagnostic clue.

Do you service modified WRX and STI models?

Yes. Dale's works with performance and modified Subaru vehicles. Increased power and torque should be considered when choosing clutch and driveline components.
