Common Car Issues During Cold Canadian Winter
It’s very common to find yourself having car troubles during winter months.
Especially when extreme low temperatures hit Canada, you may notice more and more problems. Metals tend to shrink, tires will often deflate, oil gets thicker etc…Let’s take a closer look at these issues and most importantly, the solutions.
Dead Battery
One common issue car owners face during winter is having a dead battery. The car battery tends to be the most affected by cold weather. So if your car won’t start during winter, there’s a high chance the battery is dead. The ideal situation is that the battery isn’t completely dead and it’s easily fixed with jumper cables.
There are a few great ways to prevent this from happening. You’ll want to make sure you maintain the battery connections clean, free of corrosion and also make sure it’s tight. If you live in an area where it gets very cold, you may want to look into a battery warmer.

Thick Oil
Cold weather tends to make car oil thicker. If the weather drops to -20 degrees, the engine’s oil pump will have a hard time circulating it as the oil gets too thick. It’s recommended to switch to a low viscosity oil during cold winter months.

Thick Fluids
Anti-freeze, transmission fluid and more may thicken as the weather gets colder. This can easily be fixed by letting your car run for about 10-15 minutes. Doing so will help the car fluids warm up.
We also recommend keeping a close eye on the fluid levels, make sure to maintain fluids to the level recommended.
Tire Pressure
Another common issue is tires deflating. We recommend checking your tire pressure more often than you’d normally do. A little deflation can cause unsafe and uneven tread wear.
