Charging System Inspection & Repair — Surrey, BC

Charging System Service for Gas, Diesel, Hybrid & Electric Vehicles

Battery, alternator, starter, wiring and charging-system diagnosis for all makes and models — including hybrid and electric vehicles.

Modern charging systems vary considerably by vehicle. Conventional gas and diesel vehicles rely on alternators and 12-volt batteries, while hybrids and EVs can use DC-DC converters, onboard charging systems, high-voltage batteries and complex electronic controls. Our job is to test the system first and identify the actual cause before recommending repairs.

Electrical Load Testing

Testing electrical demand and charging-system response under load to identify weak or intermittent charging performance.

Voltage Regulator Testing

Testing voltage-control behavior when overcharging, undercharging or unstable system voltage is suspected.

Drive Belt Inspection

On vehicles with belt-driven alternators, we inspect belt condition, tension and related pulleys.

Parasitic Draw Diagnosis

When a battery repeatedly goes dead, additional testing may be required to locate excessive key-off electrical draw.

Conventional vs. Hybrid & EV Charging Systems

Not every vehicle charges its battery the same way.

Gas & Diesel Vehicles

Traditional vehicles normally use an engine-driven alternator to maintain the 12-volt battery and supply electrical power while the engine is running.

  • 12-volt battery
  • Alternator
  • Voltage regulator
  • Starter motor
  • Belts, cables, wiring and grounds

Hybrid & Electric Vehicles

Hybrids and EVs may use a high-voltage traction battery, DC-DC converter, onboard charger and 12-volt support battery rather than a traditional alternator.

  • 12-volt auxiliary battery
  • High-voltage battery system
  • DC-DC conversion
  • Onboard charging electronics
  • Battery and electronics cooling systems

Battery problem or charging-system problem?

A dead battery does not automatically mean the battery itself is the cause. Proper testing can identify whether the problem is the battery, alternator, wiring, starter, parasitic draw, converter, charger or another related system.

Charging System FAQ

Common questions about battery and charging problems.

Do you service charging systems on all makes and models?

Yes. Dale's provides charging-system and electrical testing for domestic, import, European, truck, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles.

Do EVs have alternators?

Most battery-electric vehicles do not use a conventional engine-driven alternator. They generally use high-voltage battery power and a DC-DC converter to maintain the low-voltage electrical system.

Can a hybrid or EV have a dead 12-volt battery?

Yes. Hybrids and EVs still use a low-voltage battery for computers, controls and vehicle startup functions, and a weak 12-volt battery can cause warning messages or prevent the vehicle from powering up.

Does a battery warning light always mean the battery is bad?

No. A charging warning can be caused by the battery, alternator, voltage regulator, wiring, belt drive or another electrical-system issue. Testing is the best way to determine the cause.

Can you diagnose an EV that will not charge?

We can diagnose many EV charging and electrical concerns. Depending on the vehicle and fault, some high-voltage or manufacturer-specific repairs may require specialized dealer-level service.

Can you test for a battery drain?

Yes. When appropriate, parasitic-draw testing can be used to investigate excessive electrical consumption while the vehicle is turned off.
