CHECK ENGINE LIGHT & VEHICLE DIAGNOSTICS
Check Engine Light Diagnostic in Surrey
Check engine light on? Rough idle, hesitation, loss of power or another warning message? Dale's Auto Service provides professional vehicle diagnostics to identify the actual cause before recommending repairs.
VEHICLE DIAGNOSTICS
Warning lights are only one reason to diagnose a vehicle.
Modern vehicles monitor hundreds of operating conditions. A fault can appear as a warning light, drivability problem, unusual fuel consumption or an intermittent symptom.
Check Engine Light
Engine, emissions, fuel, ignition and many other faults can trigger the malfunction indicator light.
Rough Idle
Misfires, vacuum leaks, ignition faults, fuel-delivery issues and mechanical problems can affect idle quality.
Hesitation
Hesitation or poor throttle response can require testing of ignition, fuel, air and electronic control systems.
Loss of Power
Restricted airflow, fuel problems, ignition faults, turbo concerns or mechanical problems can reduce power.
Poor Fuel Economy
Sensor faults, fuel-control problems, misfires and mechanical issues can contribute to increased consumption.
Intermittent Problems
Intermittent warning lights or symptoms often require data analysis and testing under the conditions in which the problem occurs.
OUR DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS
A trouble code tells us where to start — not what part to replace.
Professional diagnosis combines vehicle history, trouble codes, freeze-frame information, live data, visual inspection and component testing as required.
Confirm
We start with the warning light, symptom and operating conditions you are experiencing.
Scan
Fault codes, freeze-frame information and available live data are reviewed.
Test
Related circuits, components and mechanical systems are tested as required.
Explain
Once the cause is identified, we explain the findings and repair options.
COMMON CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAUSES
The same warning light can have many different causes.
These are examples of systems that may trigger a check-engine light. Proper testing is required before determining the repair.
- Ignition coil or spark-plug faults
- Engine misfires
- Oxygen-sensor faults
- Mass-airflow sensor concerns
- EVAP system leaks
- Fuel-delivery problems
- Vacuum or intake leaks
- Catalytic-converter efficiency faults
- Turbo or boost-control concerns
- Engine timing or mechanical faults
WHY A CODE SCAN ISN'T ENOUGH
P0420 does not automatically mean “replace the catalytic converter.”
A trouble code identifies the condition the vehicle computer detected. It does not necessarily identify the failed component.
For example, a catalyst-efficiency code can require evaluation of exhaust leaks, oxygen-sensor operation, fuel control, engine misfires and converter performance before a repair decision.
ENGINE REPAIR & DIAGNOSTICS →CHECK ENGINE LIGHT
Is the light solid or flashing?
Solid Check Engine Light
A steady check-engine light means the vehicle computer has detected a fault. The vehicle should be diagnosed, particularly if you also notice poor running, reduced power, unusual noises or other symptoms.
Flashing Check Engine Light
A flashing light can indicate an active fault such as a severe misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. Reduce load and have the vehicle assessed promptly. If the vehicle is running very poorly or feels unsafe, stop driving and arrange assistance.
MORE THAN A CODE READER
Advanced vehicle diagnostics.
Modern vehicles may require more than simply retrieving diagnostic trouble codes. Depending on the concern, additional testing may be required.
Live Data Analysis
Review sensor and module information while systems are operating.
Electrical Testing
Circuit, power, ground, wiring and component testing where required.
Smoke Testing
Useful for diagnosing applicable EVAP, vacuum and intake leaks.
Fuel & Ignition Testing
Diagnosis of fuel delivery, ignition, misfire and drivability concerns.
Mechanical Testing
Compression, timing and other mechanical checks where symptoms require them.
Road-Test Verification
Some faults need to be evaluated under specific driving or operating conditions.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FAQ
Common diagnostic questions.
Does the trouble code tell you which part is bad?
Not necessarily. A diagnostic trouble code identifies the system or operating condition that triggered the fault. Additional testing may be required to determine the actual cause.
Can I keep driving with a check engine light on?
It depends on the fault and how the vehicle is operating. A steady light without other symptoms may be less urgent than a flashing light, severe misfire, overheating, power loss or other major drivability problem. When in doubt, have the vehicle assessed.
Why is my check engine light flashing?
A flashing check-engine light can indicate an active fault such as a severe misfire. Continued driving under those conditions can cause additional damage, including catalytic converter damage.
Can a loose gas cap cause a check engine light?
On some vehicles, an EVAP-system leak caused by a loose, damaged or improperly sealing fuel cap can trigger a fault. Other EVAP components can produce similar codes, so the system should still be properly evaluated.
Can Dale's diagnose intermittent problems?
Yes. Intermittent concerns can require review of stored information, live data and testing under the conditions where the symptom occurs.
Do you diagnose all makes and models?
Dale's services a broad range of domestic, Asian and European cars, SUVs, trucks and vans. Some specialty systems may require vehicle-specific procedures or equipment.
